During the Tết holiday in Vietnam, I set off with my Russian, Japanese, and Vietnamese friends to explore some of Da Nang’s most famous temple sites—Lady Buddha and Marble Mountain. We originally planned to check out a lighthouse too, but it was closed due to landslides.
The first temple, up in the mountains of Sơn Trà, has a heavenly vibe, with open skies and the massive Lady Buddha statue greeting you at the gate. There are also tons of monkeys around, which is always fun. But honestly, the whole place felt pretty touristy. Vietnam has this collective pressure to make money, and I feel like temples should be places for deeper reflection, not just another attraction. Still, it’s a cool experience.
Marble Mountain had a similar touristy feel, but it was still worth visiting. If you’ve seen a lot of temples before, it might not blow your mind, but I did love that wall covered in dragons! Honestly, the mountain itself is just as impressive from a distance.
I also had a fun chat with my Japanese and Vietnamese friends about the whole “fake rock” thing I keep bringing up in the video. My Vietnamese friend wasn’t too bothered, but my Japanese friend pointed out how Japanese temples put thought into every stone. Interesting contrast!
